Antisemitism Past and Present: A Conversation with Pamela Nadell and James Loeffler

To mark the release of historian Pamela Nadell’s Antisemitism: An American Tradition, the Capital Jewish Museum brings together Nadell and historian James Loeffler for a conversation on the history of antisemitism in America—past and present. The discussion will be moderated by Stacy Burdett, a policy strategist focused on combating antisemitism. Followed by a Q&A and book signing.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Professor Pamela Nadell holds the Patrick Clendenen Chair in Women’s and Gender History at American University. Her book America’s Jewish Women: A History from Colonial Times to Today won the 2019 National Jewish Book Award’s Everett Family Foundation “Book of the Year” and was translated into Hebrew.  Her new book Antisemitism, an American Tradition, will be published by W.W. Norton in October.  A past president of the Association for Jewish Studies, she consults to the museum planned for the rebuild of Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life and has testified before Congress three times.

James Loeffler is Felix Posen Professor of Jewish History at Johns Hopkins University, and Kogod Senior Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America. An award-winning author of several books, he is also a frequent contributor to The Atlantic magazine. His latest book, Exceptional Hatred: Antisemitism and the Battle over Free Speech in Modern America, will be published by Henry Holt in May 2026.
